"When I joined Voyager for Leg 2 around the West Coast of Vancouver Island in July 2011 I had some specific goals in mind. I wanted to increase my self confidence on larger sailboats, become Canadian Yachting Association certified, confirm what I already knew and learn new skills that I could transfer onto our own 46-foot sailboat. Not only did I accomplish my goals but I also had fun in the process!
Practicing everything from man overboard drills to helmwhile anchoring and docking were experienced by each crew member. Reinforcing long-ago learned navigational skills, becoming more safety conscious and writing my CYA certification on board Voyager rounded out my personal accomplishments. I treasured being part of a six woman crew for 10 days and with Valma's guidance we not only worked on our individual reasons for being there but we also formed a very cohesive team of individuals. We learned and practiced new skills together, shared all meal responsiblities and laughed a lot. I am very grateful for this experience and would encourage other women to take the opportunity to learn about sailing in a different atmosphere. Whether you're a novice or have many years of sailing experience you can benefit from Valma's wealth of knowlege and her compassionate, sensitive nature. As I continue cruising on our offshore sailboard I often reflect back to those 10 all encompassing days and can't help but smile with a sense of pride and thankfullness.
